Story Behind the Blog

When I question my sanity and "why" I am doing this, I'm not referring to the blog.  I'm well aware that thousands upon thousands of people work on their blogs daily.  This is not what I am considering my miracle.  What IS amazing is the fact that I've decided to run a half marathon by June and perhaps a full marathon in August, if all goes well and both knees are still intact.  And now, I give you my reasoning behind the goal.

In one of the many books I've been reading about running, I've been prompted to actually write pros, cons and reasons for running (each chapter has an assignment--hello, I'm a teacher, I love this stuff!).  Since my pros and reasons for running a marathon are quite similar, I will spare you the extra read and just mesh them together below.  I've also included a counterargument for each reason, which I've been told is almost more important than each reason.  Author/non-runner, Dawn Dais, states that these "exhausted-on-a-bench counterarguments" need to be well addressed for when you reach those moments when you are almost unconscious on a bench wondering why you are even putting yourself through this in the first place.  What a thoughtful way to plan!  And without further ado:

Reason 1: Get into the best shape of my life, which is really how this all "accidentally" started.  I began running to lose weight...next thing I know, I am running a marathon.
Con: Getting into the best shape of my life will hurt and burn and be very painful.
Counterargument I'm ready to face: I'd rather not put myself into physical torture in order to be in good shape.  My body is just fine the way it is...
Truth:  I better do this, regardless.

Reason 2: I find great, almost obsessive, pleasure in setting goals and reaching them--I'm an achiever!
Con: This goal kind of sucks...it's going to take a lot of time and energy...couldn't I think of another one?!
Counterargument: Sometimes reaching for a goal and almost making it can be just as good.  Even if I don't run a marathon, I will probably enjoy the benefits of training.
Truth:  Nike says, "just do it"

Reason 3: I will officially be a "runner"--a member of the "marathon club!"
Con: I will probably have no other hobbies beside running, which means I will probably quit baking, reading, etc.
Counterargument: It would be almost as cool to say I tried to train for a marathon (not really).
Truth:  The counterargument really blows, so I hope that this is a good enough reason!

Yes, I have many more reasons, which I will save for another day.  I'm well aware that people get overly stimulated by lots of information, especially when reading lame blogs that they don't care about.  See you later!

Second quote of the day: "The miracle isn't that I finished [or that I will finish].  The miracle is that I had the courage to start" -John Bingham
